Shriners Hospital/St. Louis

Shriners Hospital in St. Louis, MO accepted the first group of five Belarusian children for orthopedic surgeries in 1999.  The surgeries began in January 2000...the first of a long process.   Not long after, another group of children with congenital amputations was accepted as  “prosthetic patients.”  They were excited to begin this new adventure!

Once accepted by Shriners Hospital as patients in the Prosthetic/Orthotic Department, most are scheduled to have a replacement prosthesis or prostheses  every year because of their growth.

Due to the needed yearly replacements, Project Restoration has committed to bring the children each summer with our “Children of Chernobyl” summer program.  We take them back and forth from Kansas City to St. Louis numerous times during their stay for casting and fittings.

By now, the children are comfortable with the hospital and their yearly routine.  And they look forward to coming back to visit their “buddies,” prosthetists Marv and Brian each summer.

We are extremely grateful to the Shriners’ staff for their incredible care, kindness and commitment to the children.
